The Vatican has issued the latest update on the health of Pope Francis as the 88-year-old approaches two weeks in hospital.

The Pontiff continues to receive treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital following a bout of bronchitis and bilateral pneumonia, with the Vatican reporting signs of improvement in his condition.

However, his prognosis remains “guarded” as he remains under medical supervision.

Vatican Provides Update On Thursday Morning

According to the Holy See Press Office, 88-year-old Pope Francis had a restful night and spent the morning in recovery.

“The Pope slept well during the night and is now resting,” the Vatican confirmed in a statement on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday evening, officials noted that the Pontiff’s health had improved over the past 24 hours.

“The mild kidney insufficiency observed in recent days has subsided,” the statement read. “A chest CT scan carried out [on Tuesday] night showed a normal progression of the lung inflammation. Blood tests conducted [on Wednesday] confirmed the improvement seen [Tuesday].”

Pope Francis remains on high-flow oxygen therapy, but has not experienced any asthma-like respiratory crises as of Wednesday evening. While these updates indicate progress, doctors are maintaining a cautious outlook on his condition.

Spiritual Duties Continue Despite Hospitalization

Even during his hospitalization, Pope Francis has remained engaged in his spiritual responsibilities.

Over the weekend, the Pope personally acknowledged the immense global support he has received, stating: “I am confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy.”

He extended his gratitude to the hospital’s medical staff, adding: “I sincerely thank the doctors and health workers of this hospital for the attention they are showing me and the dedication with which they carry out their service among the sick.”

The Pope has also been deeply moved by the prayers, messages, and drawings sent by children, which have provided him with comfort during his recovery.

Global Prayers and Support Continue

As the Pope battles his illness, Catholics and world leaders continue to offer prayers and support. St. Peter’s Square has seen crowds gathering in solidarity, while leaders such as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I have sent personal messages of encouragement.
