The Vatican has released a new update on Pope Francis’ condition as he continues his hospitalization in Rome while confirming that while his prognosis remains “guarded”.
The 88-year-old Pontiff has been receiving treatment for bilateral pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since February 14.
While initial reports suggested he was responding well, his recovery took a serious turn on Monday (March 3) when he suffered “two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm.”
The Holy See Press Office has now stated on Tuesday morning: “The Pope slept through the night and now continues to rest.”
Emergency Procedures and Ongoing Treatment
Doctors performed bronchoscopies both times to remove the mucus buildup that triggered the respiratory crises. By Monday afternoon, “non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed,” according to the Vatican.
Despite the serious setbacks, the Pope “remained alert, oriented, and cooperative at all times,” the statement confirmed.
Encouragingly, his blood tests showed no elevated white blood cell count, indicating no new respiratory infection.
However, the Vatican has warned that Pope Francis’ clinical condition remains complex, and further respiratory crises remain possible. His medical team remains cautious, maintaining a “guarded” prognosis.
A Resilient Spirit Amid Health Battles
Pope Francis has battled respiratory issues since his 20s, when he had part of a lung removed due to pleurisy.
His medical history makes his current condition particularly concerning, with doctors keeping a close watch on any further complications.
Still, the Pope’s resilience has been evident throughout his hospitalization. Vatican officials previously confirmed that he has continued to pray and participate in Mass from his hospital room despite his illness.
The Catholic World Prays for the Pope
As concerns over Pope Francis’ health persist, Catholic faithful around the world continue to rally in prayer.
On Friday evening, nuns and worshippers gathered at St. Peter’s Square for Rosary prayers, while well-wishers in his home country of Argentina have also been praying for his swift recovery.
With no set timeline for his discharge, the Vatican and his medical team remain focused on ensuring his stable recovery. For now, Pope Francis continues to rest while the world watches and prays.
