If you’ve been searching for the perfect city break, look no further—Lisbon has just been crowned the World’s Leading Heritage City Destination and, for the second time, the World’s Leading City Break Destination at the 31st annual World Travel Awards.

The award ceremony took place on November 24 on the island of Madeira, in Funchal, where Lisbon cemented its place as a must-visit destination and top choice for travellers.

Carlos Moedas, Lisbon’s mayor, captured the city’s essence perfectly. “Lisbon is, today, a symbol of authenticity, excellence, and modernity,” he remarked, emphasising the city’s unique blend of historical and cultural wealth with a forward-thinking spirit.

He added that this double accolade cements Lisbon’s reputation as a “destination of excellence” while highlighting the importance of preserving its heritage. For Moedas, it’s clear—Lisbon is a city that honours its past while embracing its future.

The city’s first-ever win as the World’s Leading Heritage City Destination is no surprise to those familiar with its treasure trove of historic landmarks and cultural marvels.

From the grandeur of the Jerónimos Monastery to the iconic silhouette of the Belém Tower, Lisbon’s history is woven into its colourful, heritage-filled streets. Its secret lies in its effortless combination of old-world charm, modern attractions, and a thriving foodie scene, which draws visitors worldwide.

Find out why there’s no better time to explore its vibrant charm than right now.

Why Visit Now?

You can stroll its colourful streets and discover its many layers without battling for space. It’s the kind of trip where you’re not just a visitor but part of the scene—a refreshing change from the crush of high-season tourism.

Visiting in the cooler months also aligns with more sustainable travel practices. Mass tourism in the summer can strain the city’s infrastructure, but by heading there now, you’ll find fewer queues, friendlier locals, and a chance to support local businesses without adding to the overwhelm.

Lisbon combines things to see and experience, from world-famous monuments to cultural gems. If this is your first or fifth visit, you’re bound to discover something new. Here are some of my favourite things to do:

One of the best ways to get your bearings in Lisbon, and see some of the most popular sights, is by joining a free walking tour.

These tours, led by knowledgeable and passionate guides, take you through the city’s most iconic areas and uncover the stories behind its colourful façades, cobbled streets, and striking landmarks.

Popular routes often include the historic Alfama district, the birthplace of Fado music; the grand Praça do Comércio, where Lisbon opens to the Tagus River; and the Bairro Alto neighbourhood, known for its vibrant nightlife and street art. Tours are usually conducted in small groups, giving you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and soak up the good vibes.

While the tours themselves are free, the guides rely on tips—so you can decide how much the experience was worth. Most travellers agree it’s one of the best-value ways to discover the city and pick up tips for where to eat, drink, and explore further.

Search online for tour operators such as Lisbon Chill-Out Free Tours or Sandemans New Europe, which are highly recommended.

The Santa Justa Lift: A Shortcut with a View

Lisbon’s Santa Justa Lift is more than just a way to get from A to B—it’s an iconic piece of the city’s architectural heritage. Designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, a student of Gustave Eiffel, the lift connects the Baixa district to the Largo do Carmo plateau and offers epic views over the city. Its intricate ironwork is a masterpiece, making it a standout landmark.

However, there’s a catch: the queue for the lift can be notoriously long, especially during peak times. But here’s the insider tip—you can skip the queue entirely by walking around to the back and climbing the hill to the viewing platform.

This route takes you past the hauntingly beautiful Carmo Convent ruins, a Gothic church partially destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and left open to the sky.

Once at the top, you can enjoy the sweeping views of Lisbon without the wait. If you’d still like to experience the lift, head back down using the elevator—queues for the descent are significantly shorter, though you’ll still need to purchase a ticket.

Discover the Soul of Fado

Music is at the heart of Lisbon’s identity, and Fado is its soul. Recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, this melancholic genre captures the city’s longing and love. Head to Alfama, the birthplace of Fado, and settle into a cosy tavern for a live performance. It’s a moment that will linger long after the music fades.

Roam the Colourful Streets

From the pastel façades of Bairro Alto to the azulejo-tiled walls in Alfama, Lisbon’s streets are a veritable art gallery.

Wander through cobbled alleyways that twist and turn unpredictably, leading to viewpoints like Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. These terraces offer jaw-dropping panoramas over the city’s iconic red rooftops and the shimmering Tagus River.

Dive into Lisbon’s Royal Legacy

A short trip from the city centre takes you to Sintra and Mafra, both steeped in royal history. Sintra’s Romantic-era palaces, particularly the candy-coloured Pena Palace, look like something out of a fairy tale, while the Royal Palace of Mafra wows with its grandeur. Both are UNESCO sites and perfect for a day of exploration.

Savour Every Bite

Lisbon’s culinary scene is a feast for the senses, rooted in tradition but with a flair for innovation. Begin with the city’s staple: bacalhau (salt cod). Whether it’s bacalhau à brás—a comforting mix of shredded cod, eggs, and crispy potatoes—or golden pasteis de bacalhau (cod fritters), you’ll find this Portuguese classic everywhere. For a truly authentic experience, Laurentina – O Rei do Bacalhau is a long-time favourite among locals.

No trip to Lisbon is complete without indulging in a warm pastel de nata. These custard tarts are legendary, and while they’re available citywide, the original recipe lives at Pastéis de Belém, just a short walk from the Belém Tower. Expect a queue, but it’s worth it for their flaky, buttery perfection.

Make sure to also visit the famous Time Out Market, where you can sample everything from fresh seafood to contemporary takes on Portuguese classics. Alternatively, explore neighbourhood taverns in Alfama or Bairro Alto, where petiscos—Portugal’s small plates—are served alongside robust local wines.

Ride the Iconic Tram 28

The historic yellow tram is more than just a mode of transport; it’s a journey through Lisbon’s most picturesque districts. Hop aboard to experience the city’s character, from the stately squares of Baixa to the postcard-perfect streets of Alfama.

Embrace Lisbon’s Modern Side

While the past takes centre stage, Lisbon’s modern flair is undeniable. The LX Factory, a trendy creative hub in a converted industrial complex, showcases the city’s artistic energy. Browse independent boutiques, explore quirky galleries, or simply soak up the vibe in a lively café.
