Tired of your potatoes sprouting before you’ve even had the chance to enjoy them?

A genius storage trick has been revealed that could save your spuds from going green. Potatoes, a British dinner table staple, can be a bit tricky to keep fresh, whether they’re homegrown or store-bought.

But fear not, there’s a nifty tip that will prevent your taters from getting wrinkly or turning an unsightly green. First things first, if you’re picking up your potatoes from the supermarket, ditch those plastic bags to let the air flow.

A clever user on the GoodFoodForGood TikTok page dished out their best advice for keeping your potatoes in tip-top shape for longer. The TikTok video was captioned: “This tip will keep your potatoes fresh for longer. Save money and prevent waste with this hack. You can thank us later.”

The savvy individual explained: “This one simple hack is a game-changer when it comes to keeping potatoes fresh. Did you know that storing your potatoes with apples can actually help them from sprouting? This is because apples produce a gas called ethylene which slows down sprouting.”

It turns out that the ethylene gas emitted by apples can generally extend the freshness of potatoes and slow down their ripening process, although it might have the reverse effect on other fruits and veggies.

Storing apples next to ethylene-sensitive items like onions, melons, broccoli, and peaches is not a smart move, warns a food expert. They also suggest keeping spuds in a “cool, dry place like your cabinet.”

Echoing the TikToker’s advice, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) advises that potatoes should be kept in a dark, cool spot at temperatures above six degrees. Yet, fresh research indicates that refrigerating potatoes might actually extend their shelf life.
