The history of men’s underwear has a surprising and ancient origin. According to biblical lore, the first “undergarment” was a simple fig leaf used by Adam in the Garden of Eden. After realizing his difference from Eve, Adam covered himself with a leaf, feeling a newfound sense of modesty. From this early moment, the idea of “slip pants” or underwear began to evolve, eventually taking on various forms to meet men’s needs over centuries.

Ancient Loincloths: The Earliest Form of Men’s Underwear

The earliest known form of men’s underwear dates back to around 3000 BC. These primitive garments, called loincloths, were typically crafted from rough cloth or animal skin. Simple yet functional, loincloths served as the primary means of covering and protecting.

One of the oldest examples of a human wearing a loincloth is Otzi the Iceman, whose mummified body was discovered in the Otztal Alps glacier on the border between Austria and Italy. Otzi’s remains date back to the Bronze Age, around 3300 BC, and show he wore clothing made from woven grass and animal skin. This discovery reveals that loincloths were present in ancient European societies, signifying that basic underwear existed even in the early stages of human civilization.

The Symbolic Loincloths of Ancient Egypt

By 1352 BC, loincloths had become more widespread, particularly in ancient Egypt during the reign of the Pharaohs. Archaeologists uncovered a remarkable collection of 145 loincloths among the burial items in King Tutankhamun’s tomb, illustrating their importance in royal and noble life. Egyptian loincloths were made of finely crafted linen, which symbolized authority and strength.

In 1979, archaeologists made another exciting discovery: triangular pieces of cloth with belts, believed to be ancient loincloths, indicating the established status of this garment in Egyptian culture. For Egyptian men, and particularly for the elite, the loincloth was more than just functional; it held significant cultural symbolism, representing power and status.

From Function to Symbolism: The Role of Loincloths

The journey of men’s underwear from simple fig leaves to functional loincloths reveals more than just advancements in clothing. Loincloths evolved to meet the practical needs of men across cultures while also taking on symbolic roles in society. In ancient Egypt, the loincloth was a marker of social standing and authority. For men in these early civilizations, underwear was not only about covering up but also about projecting power and respect.

From these early beginnings, men’s underwear continued to evolve, adapting to new materials and styles as societies changed. Today, while underwear may seem like a basic necessity, its long history reminds us of the cultural and symbolic roles garments have played over millennia.
