Much-loved baker Mary Berry has won over fans with her countless recipes over the years, and her cheese straws are no exception.
These savoury snacks, which require butter, flour, salt, and cheese, are a cinch to make. Not only can they be made in advance, but they’re also kid-friendly, making them a perfect addition to any lunchbox.
They’re also great for the festive season, whether you pop them out to snack on in front of the TV, or make them to wow your guests at a Christmas get together. Mary says: “This traditional cheese straws recipe creates a delicious snack. This recipe takes about 30 minutes to prepare and can serve up to four to six people.”
Being so simple and speedy to make, there’s little reason to not give them a go. In fact, many of the ingredients needed to make these tasty treats are likely already in your cupboard at home, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Mary Berry’s cheese straws – ingredients:
200g self-raising flour.
One level teaspoon of dry mustard powder.
A quarter-teaspoon of salt.
Freshly ground black pepper.
114g butter.
125g mature Cheddar cheese, grated.
A little beaten egg.
Method:
Begin by preheating your oven to 200C or 180C Fan and lightly greasing two or three baking trays. In a bowl, combine the self-raising flour, mustard powder, salt, and a good twist of pepper.
Work in the butter until you’ve got a mixture that resembles fine breadcrumbs, then fold in the grated cheese. Gradually, add the beaten egg until you have a dough, then knead it on a floured surface until it’s smooth.
Roll out the dough to about 6mm thick and cut into thin strips. Place the strips on your prepared trays and bake them in the oven for roughly 10 minutes, just until they start to turn golden at the edges. Allow the cheese straws to cool slightly on the trays before transferring them to a wire rack to cool down completely.

This ‘foolproof’ and ‘stress-free’ Melanzane Parmigiana requires just 30 minutes prep time, and won’t leave you with a kitchen full of dirty pot and pans. Plus, you can freeze any leftovers (if that’s even a thing in your household) for those lazy days where you just really can’t be bothered to cook.
Mary Berry serves this delicious lasagne with a dressed salad, but if you want to whack some garlic bread and chips in the oven – we won’t judge.
