Established in 1947 by Major Bill Hendricks, a reservist, Toys for Tots is a program administered by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. It aims to distribute toys to children from families unable to afford gifts during the festive season.

The program’s mission is to gather and distribute new, unwrapped toys to underprivileged children for Christmas. As stated on their website, “The Foundation provides the leadership, funding, and support needed for successful annual toy collection and distribution campaigns.”

In 1997, the program introduced one of the most heartwarming commercials ever seen. Shared by numerous people each Christmas, the commercial portrays a touching scene where a young boy, holding a piece of paper, approaches a Marine and questions whether he’s Santa Claus.

Despite being on duty, the Marine initially doesn’t acknowledge the boy. Undeterred, the boy repeats his question and hands over the paper, revealing it to be his Christmas wish list. He entrusts the list to the Marine, hoping for his wishes to come true.

To the surprise and delight of all, the Marine, without making eye contact, opens his hand and accepts the boy’s list. The commercial serves to raise awareness about the vital mission of Toys For Tots, emphasizing that there are children without access to gifts and encouraging everyone to play a role in making a positive impact on a child’s life.
