Pope Francis remains in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for double pneumonia and bronchitis, now marking his 11th night in care.

The latest update from the Vatican comes on the morning of Tuesday, February 25.

The Pontiff was admitted to the hospital on February 14, and has undergone blood transfusions and other treatments, as doctors say he’s been battling a “critical” condition.

Encouraging Health Update

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis “rested well throughout the night,” and doctors have reported no new episodes of asthma-like respiratory distress.

Oxygen therapy is ongoing, but with a slightly reduced flow and oxygen levels. Additionally, the Pope’s mild renal insufficiency remains stable and is being closely monitored without raising any concerns.

“The Holy Father’s clinical condition, despite its severity, has shown a slight improvement,” the Vatican shared on Monday evening. “No episodes of asthma-like respiratory distress occurred today, and some laboratory tests have shown improvement.”

While his condition is improving, doctors are maintaining a “cautious” prognosis due to the complexity of his overall health.

Spiritual Duties Continue Despite Illness

Even while hospitalized, Pope Francis has continued to fulfill his spiritual commitments.

On Monday morning, he received the Holy Eucharist in his hospital apartment, and in the afternoon, he resumed some of his work.

In a touching moment of solidarity, the Pope reached out to the pastor of Holy Family parish in Gaza to express his “paternal closeness” to the people there. The call came after reports emerged that the parish community had sent a video message to the Pontiff, to which he responded with gratitude.

In his own message over the weekend, Pope Francis acknowledged the overwhelming global support he has received.

“I am confidently continuing my hospitalization at the Gemelli Hospital, carrying on with the necessary treatment; and rest is also part of the therapy,” he shared.

He also extended thanks to the medical staff, saying: “I sincerely thank the doctors and health workers of this hospital for the attention they are showing me and the dedication with which they carry out their service among the sick.”

The Pope was particularly touched by messages and drawings from children, expressing his appreciation for their heartfelt concern.

Clarifications Amid Speculation

The Vatican also addressed speculation regarding a potential transfer to Rome’s Isola Tiberina — Gemelli Isola Hospital.

Reports had suggested that an apartment had been prepared for Pope Francis, but officials dismissed the claim, explaining that the space is designated for private patients and is not intended for the Pontiff.

Global Support and Prayers Continue

Pope Francis’ health struggles have sparked an outpouring of prayers from Catholics and world leaders alike.

Hundreds have gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pray for his recovery, while religious leaders around the world have sent messages of support.

Among them, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, leader of the Orthodox Church, penned a handwritten note referring to Pope Francis as his “beloved brother,” wishing him a “swift and complete recovery.”

While the Pope remains under careful medical supervision, the latest update offers hope to those following his condition closely. As the Vatican continues to monitor his progress, the world remains united in prayers for his health and well-being.
