As previously reported, the former One Direction singer died at the age of 31 on Wednesday, having fallen from his hotel room.
TMZ reported that the singer died following a fall from a third-floor hotel room balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The outlet shared that several witnesses had seen the star fall from the height and that a red tent was erected over his body as an investigation into the tragic incident began.
Witnesses claimed that the tragic incident occurred shortly after 5PM and that Payne had allegedly been “acting erratic in the hotel lobby earlier”.
Reuters also shared that local newspapers La Nacion and Clarin reported that police were called to the hotel in the neighborhood of Palermo after an emergency call regarding an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.”
AFP adds that a hotel manager made the call, and was concerned about a guest “destroying the room”.
The manager reportedly told the call operator that the guest “has a balcony, and we are afraid they might do something to put their life at risk”.
However, shortly after their arrival, reports say that a loud sound echoed from the hotel’s interior courtyard, and Payne’s body was soon discovered.
The BBC reports that the head of Buenos Aires’s SAME emergency medical service, Alberto Crescenti, told local television Payne had suffered “very serious injuries incompatible with life as a result of his fall” and there was “no possibility of resuscitation”.
Shortly before news of Payne’s tragic death broke, the singer had uploaded several posts on his Snapchat story from his time in Argentina.
In one video, Payne could be seen playfully chiding his girlfriend Kate Cassidy about leaving a hat on the dining table, as the pair revealed that they’d been enjoying waking up at midday during their time in Argentina.
In another snap, Payne showed the sunshine outside his hotel as he told his followers: “Happy I got some time away.”
Other clips showed him posing happily with Cassidy, before ending on a photo of the two of them in swimwear, taking a selfie in the mirror.
It is believed that the photos and videos were taken several days earlier, with Cassidy having reportedly flown back to the US, leaving Payne in Argentina.
Payne, who was a former member of One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, and Zayn Malik, is a father to a seven-year-old son, Bear Payne, with his ex, singer Cheryl.
Payne had found global fame as part of One Direction after the band finished third on the British version of the X Factor in 2010, but went on an ongoing hiatus in 2015 as the members pursued solo projects.
Payne had attended Horan’s concert in the country earlier in the month, where he was seen happily interacting with fans in the crowd while watching his former bandmate perform.
Fans had swarmed the hotel following news of Payne’s death, holding a candlelit vigil for the beloved star.
