Paris Hilton celebrates iconic moment she ‘invented’ with Britney Spears

Paris Hilton has celebrated the landmark moment she and Britney Spears “invented” the selfie – playfully poking fun at herself.

The 43-year-old reality star and businesswoman has had a long friendship with 42-year-old Britney. The ladies grew up in the spotlight together and were notoriously wild around Hollywood at the turn of the century – where they were often joined by fellow rising starlet, Lindsay Lohan.

Back in 2017, Paris sparked a social commentary storm when she claimed that she and Britney invented ‘The Selfie’ – the act of taking a photo of yourself. While she was ridiculed at the time, the star has stuck to her guns over the opinion and has revelled in the comments her thoughts have generated.

On Wednesday, Paris poked the social media bear once again, by sharing a trip of snaps of herself with Britney via Instagram and captioning the images: “18 years ago today @BritneySpears and I invented the Selfie #IconsOnly.” She added the twins emoji, camera flash emoji and flame emoji to the caption.

Her comment and photos were celebrated by her followers who were delighted to see her acknowledging her past comment on the seventh anniversary of her claim. One wrote in response to her Instagram post: “history was made”. Another typed: “Paris and Britney are better than you (it doesn’t matter when you read this) ICONIC.” And a further fan wrote: “Yall invented being iconic.”

Paris has previously claimed to have invented the selfie even before her photos with Britney. She told W Magazine in 2017: “If a beeper had a camera, I would have taken a selfie with it. I think I have a selfie from when I was a little kid, like on a disposable camera.”

She also told the publication that the selfie phenomenon had caused other people to find fame, lamenting: “Nowadays, I feel like it’s so easy becoming famous. Anybody with a phone can do it.” Paris and Britney’s friendship has stood the test of time – with the Simple Life star supporting the singer when her controversial conservatorship ended in November 2021 and amid a flurry of documentaries about her experience.

She told E! News in September 2021: “I haven’t spoken to her in a few months. I haven’t even watched the film yet, because I’ve been so busy. But I heard it’s just a really sad movie. It makes me really feel for her, because she’s such a sweet girl and has such a big heart and I just can’t imagine being controlled like that. You know, when you’re an adult and you’ve worked your whole life for building this empire and then just to be treated like a child, it’s just not fair.”

She added: “I’ve been reading all of these articles coming out where they were just saying, like, Britney, Paris and just like, a group of us were just were treated so unfairly and just like, this really misogynistic view and just being very cruel and mean and making fun of us. It made me think a lot this week, reading all these new things that are coming out after the Britney film.”
