According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. That equates to more than 9,500 Americans diagnosed with this disease every single day. This is not just an issue affecting Americans, though, with 170,000 people diagnosed annually in the United Kingdom. Considering the prevalence of the disease, it’s important to be able to recognize the early signs. Therefore, we have compiled a list of 5 subtle skin changes that indicate the development of skin cancer.

There are Constantly Itchy or Dry Patches on Your Skin

In many cases, the appearance of skin changes such as itchy or dry skin patches are caused by something harmless. However, it could also indicate the onset of something more serious, such as psoriasis, eczema, or a rare kind of cancer called cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. While common issues with dryness typically go away with topical treatment and time, patches resulting from cutaneous T-cell lymphoma often persist for years, changing in texture, and becoming more painful and scaly. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, itchy skin that doesn’t go away could also be caused by one of the most prevalent kinds of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma. Itchy patches of skin can also result from conditions such as diabetes, liver disorders, or kidney disease.

The Sudden Appearance of Strange Lesions or Moles

Keeping a close eye on skin lesions and moles is essential for the early detection of skin cancers such as melanoma. You should go to a dermatologist if there is any change in color, shape, or size in your existing moles. Also, look out for an irregular border when examining your moles. Early detection and removal of melanoma significantly improve survival rates, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. There are many types of moles that look like melanoma, yet are benign. However, people who have these moles are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. Genetics is a factor, so it’s a good idea to have your skin checked out if there is a history of melanoma in your family.

A Sudden Discoloration of Skin

If your skin suddenly turns red, yellow, or dark in patches, it could be an indication of an underlying condition. These skin changes result from conditions such as liver disease, lupus, rosacea, and acanthosis nigrican. Yellow skin is usually indicative of liver disease, whereas red skin is usually a sign of rosacea or lupus. Dark patches of skin, especially on the neck or underarms could be a sign of acanthosis nigrican, a condition typically associated with hormonal imbalances and diabetes. There are also certain medications that can cause hyperpigmentation, such as birth control pills and chemotherapy drugs. Changes in skin color can also result from certain deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B12 in your diet.

Wounds that Won’t Heal

A common early warning sign of basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma is a sore that bleeds without any reason, opens often, and doesn’t within two weeks. These cancers are typically characterized by red patches, open sores, and growths that often crus over. Wounds that heal slowly may also be the result of diabetes, where the body’s ability to repair damaged skin is impaired by reduced circulation. According to the American Cancer Society, wounds exposed to the sun that do not heal quickly should receive medical attention as soon as possible. Any chronic wound that becomes infected can result in cellulitis or even sepsis in severe cases.

The Appearance of New Bumps

Other skin changes that could indicate the onset of various skin cancers are the sudden appearance of lumps, bleeding scaly patches, and raised areas. According to dermatologists, even growths that appear minor shouldn’t be ignored, particularly if they have an irregular border or grow quickly. While certain benign skin growths are common with aging, any unusual changes should be noted and examined by a professional. New growths could also result from infections such as HPV, so it’s always recommended to have a doctor look at any new growths that have developed.

The Bottom Line on Skin Changes

Your skin changes in appearance due to many different factors. While many of these changes are the result of aging and typically prove to be benign, it’s always recommended to keep an eye on any new growth. It’s important that a trained physician examine any skin changes to determine their cause and treat them if necessary. If you notice any strange lesions, moles, bumps, discoloration, or wounds that won’t heal, book an appointment with a doctor or dermatologist as soon as you can.
