Selena Gomez shared an “awkward” interaction with Karla Sofía Gascón at the 2025 Oscars – months after her Emilia Perez co-star’s alleged tweet about her resurfaced on social media.
The 97th Academy Awards had its fair share of dramatic moments, but one of the most talked-about interactions of the night involved Selena Gomez and her co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón.
The two actresses came face-to-face at Hollywood’s biggest night, which was held inside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Gascón, 52, was nominated for Best Actress but lost to Anora star Mikey Madison.
Tension between the two stars has been building for weeks, ever since Gascón’s resurfaced tweets caused a stir online.
The Emilia Perez star came under fire for past posts criticizing Muslims and George Floyd. She also shared an alleged tweet about Gomez, 32, in 2022, but it was dug up by internet sleuths just ahead of the Oscars.
According to PEOPLE, Gascón reportedly called the Only Murders In The Building actress a “rich rat” who will “never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife,” referring to Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber.
But the Spanish star denied writing the message. In an interview with CNN Español last month- reportedly done without Netflix’s approval – she addressed the controversy, saying: “Of course that’s not mine.”
“I have never said anything about my colleague. I would never refer to her that way,” she added.
Despite Gascón’s alleged comment about Gomez, she shared a brief but eyebrow-raising interaction with the ‘Same Old Love’ singer at the awards ceremony.
In a now-viral picture shared on social media, she was seen walking over to Gomez, who was seated in the audience at the Dolby Theatre. As she approached, the former Disney Channel star stood up, awkwardly kissed her co-star on the cheek, and quickly sat back down.
The moment didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, who quickly took to social media to share their thoughts. “Selena should stop talking with her. Karla is disgusting after everything she did,” one person wrote on X.
“This was definitely a choice like why would u do that,” a second said. “Yikes. Well that’s awkward,” a third added.
One person was not happy with Gomez greeting Gascón and said: “Imagine calling yourself a philanthropist, crying for your people from Mexico and then supporting a woman that has spoken against every minority.”
The controversy overshadowed the 52-year-old’s historic nomination as the first openly transgender performer up for an Oscar.
Even her Emilia Perez co-star, Zoe Saldaña, weighed in and admitted that she was “disappointed” over the drama.
“I can’t speak for other people’s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here,” she added, per Variety.
Gomez, for her part, acknowledged the situation last month, sharing that “some of the magic has disappeared” when asked how she was handling the ordeal.
“But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could,” she concluded.

The Academy Award host Conan O’Brien didn’t miss the chance to poke fun at the backlash during his opening monologue.
Referencing Anora, which set a record for the most uses of the f-word in a film, O’Brien joked: “That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist: ‘You tweeted WHAT?’”
He followed up with: “Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight, and Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel.” Cameras caught Gascón reacting with a tight, cringing smile.
