Gabourey Sidibe is reflecting on her 2021 nuptials.
Shortly after celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with her husband Brandon Frankel, the actress, 41, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about her favorite memory from the day they tied the knot.
“Well, we didn’t have a wedding. We just got married at the kitchen table; which was fine, and it was perfect, and it was COVID, and it was … Honestly, it was perfect for us,” Sidibe said.
“Our anniversary was like two weeks ago. So we celebrated four years,” Sidibe continued to PEOPLE. “Married life has honestly been really, really dope. He truly is my best friend. We’re genuinely best friends. We really are.”
Both Sidibe and Frankel marked their fourth wedding anniversary on their respective Instagram pages on March 12.
In her sentimental post, Sidibe reflected on the pair’s love story and how a few months after they met she took Frankel to see a tarot card reader “who told him he’d be married soon with kids.”
“I thought ‘Uh oh’, because I knew that his future was also mine. I just KNEW it,” Sidibe’s caption continued. “I worried that I wasn’t actually grown up enough to be a wife and mother. He wasn’t nervous at all. He was so sure about our future. About us. About me. 2 months later, he tattooed a small G on his ring finger. A year later we were engaged and 4 years ago today, we were married.”
Adding that she wishes she “hadn’t wasted the time worrying,” Sidibe shared that her husband has been “running full speed towards me, everyday since we met in March of 2019 and if I had realized sooner what a wonderful husband he would turn out to be, I would’ve stood still and let him catch me sooner.”
“Happy Anniversary to my love @brandontour. Thank you for lifting me up on the best days and holding me down during the worst days. When we meet again, in our next life, let’s have kids in our twenties so that our knees don’t hurt when we play with them. 💜💜💜💜,” she concluded.
Sidibe’s message was featured alongside a series of snaps of the couple together, solo shots of Frankel and photos with their twins Maya and Cooper, who were born in early April 2024.
Meanwhile, Frankel declared Sidibe the “love of my life” in his emotional post marking their wedding anniversary, with the final slide showing a photo taken moments after they welcomed their twins.
“Once in a lifetime you meet someone who just makes everything click, makes everything so much brighter, and just makes your heart sing,” Frankel wrote. “These have hands down been the happiest, funnest, most rewarding years of my entire life.”
He continued, “ You are the sun, moon, and stars in my sky- we made the most perfect, beautiful, hilarious twins together…and watching you so effortlessly grow into being a Mom has been just the best. You had already aced being a wife! Thank you for loving me the way you do, and I can’t wait for a million more of these milestones together.”
Elsewhere in her interview with PEOPLE, Sidibe opened up about watching her relationship with Frankel develop over the years.
“It’s been really, really beautiful to see him go from being a stranger who I would side eye, because I’m suspicious of every stranger, to being my friend, to being this guy I’m kind of interested in, and to my boyfriend and then my fiancé and then my husband, and now a father, and now the head of our family,” she explained. “It’s been really interesting and wonderful to watch him grow as a person in that way. And I can only hope that it’s as beautiful for him to watch me that way.”
The Oscar nominee told PEOPLE in February that she plans to spend 2025 balancing motherhood responsibilities with her career, and the Precious star’s latest project sees her lead Lifetime movie Give Me Back My Daughter.
The film tells the story of Renee (Sidibe), “a single mother struggling to make ends meet and who after making a heartbreaking decision, loses custody of her daughter Imani (Cadence Reese),” according to an official synopsis.
Give Me Back My Daughter premieres on Lifetime on Saturday, April 5 at 8 p.m. EST/PT.
