Carlos Santana is currently in hospital recovering from dehydration after postponing his San Antonio, Texas show on Tuesday, April 22.
Michael Vrionis, a rep for Santana, 77, informed Us Weekly on Tuesday evening that the musician “has been taken” to the hospital “for observation in San Antonio.”
Vrionis said in a statement provided to Us, “It is with profound disappointment that I have to inform you all that tonight’s show in San Antonio has been postponed. Mr. Santana was at the venue (Majestic Theatre) preparing for tonight’s show when he experienced an event that was determined to be dehydration.”
He continued, “Out of an abundance of caution and the health of Mr Santana, the decision to postpone the show was the most prudent course of action. He is doing well and is looking forward to coming back to San Antonio soon as well as continuing his U.S. Tour. Thank you all very much for your understanding. The show will be rescheduled soon.”
News of Santana’s medical emergency was first reported on by TMZ, who detailed on Tuesday that he was “put into an ambulance” before leaving the venue and checking into hospital “for further testing.”
According to the outlet, members of the audience at San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre reported that Santana was conducting a sound check when “he suffered an emergency and had to be taken out of the venue on a gurney.”
The health scare comes less than three years after the “Smooth” singer collapsed on stage during a Detroit show, with fans seeing Santana waving “as he was wheeled off stage,” per The Guardian who reportedly on the incident in July 2022.
Santana addressed the collapse via Facebook after the event took place. “Just taking it easy. Forgot to eat and drink water so I dehydrated and passed out,” he wrote via the social media platform at the time. A rep also told the outlet that “Santana had also suffered from heat exhaustion.”
In 2021, Santana revealed that he underwent a heart procedure, leading to the cancelation of several Las Vegas shows scheduled in December that year.
Posting a health update via Twitter on December 2, 2021, and shared by Billboard at the time, Santana confirmed that the procedure was “unscheduled.”
The guitar player rose to fame in the last 1960s with his band, Santana, who are globally renowned for fusing rock, jazz and Latin music. He is regarded as one of the most successful and influential musicians of all time.
