The Rajasthan state in India was home to a horrifying event as a camel, left tied up in extreme heat, killed its owner in a brutal attack. A severe heatwave pushed temperatures above 100 degrees, a far cry from any bearable conditions for a tethered animal. The camel became violent when the owner came to untiee it, and reminds us all that even the most docile creatures have limits to being mistreated. The attack has drawn attention to animal welfare and the unpredictable nature of a cacmel under duress.

A Fatal Oversight in Extreme Conditions

The victim, who was identified only as Urjaram by local media outlets, had guests over when he suddenly remembered he had left his camel tied up outside in the heat. Witnesses stated the camel had been left there for hours with no shade or water during an intense heatwave. At the time, other areas of Rajasthan recorded temperatures over 124 degrees. When he finally went to untie the camel, the animal – pushed beyond its tolerance – lashed out with unexpected ferocity. “The animal lifted him by the neck and threw him onto the ground, chewed the body, and severed the head,” recounted Thakara Ram, a villager who witnessed the scene. Even more troubling was the fact that this wasn’t the first time Urjaram and his camel had been aggressive to each other. There seemed to be a history between the owner and animal, ending with a deadly confrontation.

Regaining Control

The rampage didn’t end with the one event, though. After the camel continued to act aggressively, it took 25 villagers six hours to calm the frenzied camel down. This extraordinary strength and determination really speaks to both how hard animals will fight when provoked, and how long this poor camel had been agitated for under its old owner. The struggle should serve as a warning to how dramatically camel can change its tune when extreme stress or mistreatment comes into the mix. Local authorities used ropes tied to a truck to eventually pull it away from what was left of Urjaram’s remains. The incident has rocked the tightly-knit community, and in a place where humans and animals coexist in close quarters it has prompted debate over proper animal care, especially during extreme weather conditions.

A Camel’s Nature

Camels are generally seen as friendly creatures – often developing close bonds with their handlers. But experts do note that these animals can become unpredictably dangerous under certain circumstances (clearly). Male camels in particular can develop aggressive tendencies during mating season or when they feel threatened. Though these cases are rare, deadly camel attacks have been documented worldwide. Incidents have been recorded in Texas – two people were killed at a breeding farm – and in Mexico – a camel sanctuary owner was bit, kicked, and sat on. Specialists point out that despite their relaxed nature, a camel weighs over 1,500 pounds, and have powerful jaws, strong necks, and can kick in a circular motion – making them formidable opponents when provoked. The camel in Rajasthan may have been further agitated because it did not get its daily treat, disrupting is routine as well as being stuck in the sweltering heat.

Responsibilities come with animal ownership, especially when working in extreme climates. While camels are evolved to deal with desert conditions, tolerances have limits. This camel was tethered and unable to regulate its comfort levels, with no access to shade or water. It is clear that in this situation, this camel was mistreated. Does that mean Urjaram deserved to die? No. But climate change is going to bring more frequent and intense heatwaves to regions like Rajasthan, so hopefully this unfortunate incident will ensure others take proper care of their animals – ensuring both human safety and animal welfare in the future.
