A 20-year-old dog, Radar, was abandoned at a shelter for euthanasia. His story revealed hidden pain and a final month filled with love.

When Radar, a small 20-year-old dog described as “Ewok-looking,” was dropped off at Harris County Animal Shelter, his owner requested that he be euthanized due to his age, diarrhea, and vomiting.

At first glance, it was easy to see that Radar was scared and confused, likely searching for something familiar in the unfamiliar surroundings. Shelter workers were unsure whether they could save him, but they hoped to provide him with some dignity in his final days.

Fortunately, Radar’s fate changed when the Animal Justice League intervened. They picked him up the next day and brought him to Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital for evaluation. Despite being told Radar was 20 years old, the vets discovered he was younger.

However, he was still in poor health, suffering from fever and severe tenderness near his rectal area, making even simple tasks like going to the bathroom painful.

Radar’s foster mom provided a nurturing home, preparing bland meals of chicken, rice, and pumpkin to soothe his stomach. She noted how much Radar enjoyed eating, especially snacks like baby food turkey, and he soon began to show small signs of recovery.
